the shadow.
A familiar Moon. An unfamiliar light. Replay the deep partial lunar eclipse, as Earth’s shadow travels across its face.
Follow Earth’s shadow
Watch the August 2026 eclipse unfold, from the first change in the Moon’s bright surface to the return of its familiar light.
The shadow reaches the Moon
Something familiar begins to change. Earth stands between the Sun and Moon, and its shadow reaches the lunar surface. The bright edge softens; slowly, another kind of night moves across the disc.
A thin edge of light remains
Near maximum, most of the Moon rests in Earth’s shadow. A muted red glow colours the darkened surface, while a thin edge remains outside the umbra. This deep partial eclipse leaves just a little light at the margin.
The lunar landscape returns
A bright edge returns. Craters and plains find the light again as Earth’s shadow moves on. The familiar Moon comes back into the landscape, carrying no sign of the slow transformation we have just watched.
Discover the Moon for yourself
The shadow has passed, but the Moon still has more to show. On a Moonwalk, follow its light across the landscape, then find the crater rims and dark plains through the telescope with your guide.
